How the movie color palette generator works

Upload any video and this tool reduces the whole thing to a single strip of color. It samples frames evenly across the entire runtime, averages each one down to one color, and lines them up left to right in the order they appear — so the first frame of your film is the leftmost stripe and the last frame is the rightmost. The result is sometimes called a movie barcode and sometimes a movie color palette; they are the same idea.

  1. Pick a video. A full feature, a trailer, a wedding film, a game capture — anything with a runtime.
  2. Let it read. For most videos nothing is uploaded at all: your browser samples the frames locally and sends only a small contact sheet.
  3. Get your strip. You see the finished palette in a few moments, free, as a watermarked preview.

What the colors actually are

Each stripe is the average color of one sampled frame — not a hand-picked swatch and not a scene. Frames are taken at even intervals through the runtime, so a two-hour film contributes thousands of stripes rather than one per scene. That is why the output looks the way it does: long stretches of a single mood read as wide bands of one color, and a fast cut between a dark interior and daylight shows up as a hard edge.

It also explains why averaged palettes are calmer than the film felt. Averaging a frame pulls every pixel toward the middle, so a shot that struck you as vivid red lands as a muted brick. Films shot with a narrow palette — Dune, Blade Runner 2049, Coraline — produce the most striking strips, because there is less to average away.

Getting a good result

  • Longer is better. A 90-minute film gives the strip enough stripes to show a shape. A 30-second clip gives you a handful of blocks.
  • Letterboxing flattens it. Black bars get averaged into every stripe and drag the whole palette darker.
  • Strong color grading shows up best. Anything with a deliberate look — a single-color horror film, an animated feature — beats naturalistic daylight footage.
  • Files up to 4 GB are accepted.
