What this movie color palette generator does
This movie color palette generator reads your video scene by scene and returns the colours that actually define it, not just the ones that cover the most pixels. Copy any hex code with one tap, or download the whole palette as an image.
How the colors are chosen
Most colour tools simply count pixels, which is why they hand back five shades of grey: films are mostly shadow, so the shadows win. This film color palette generator discards the near-black and near-grey pixels before it measures anything, then groups what remains in CIELAB — a colour space built to match how the eye perceives difference, rather than how a screen stores numbers.
Each final colour is then matched back to a real pixel from your video. Nothing is averaged, so every hex code you copy is a colour that genuinely appears on screen. A small vivid detail — a neon sign, a red coat — can beat a large dull wall, which is how a person reads a frame too.
Movie color palettes and cinema colour grading
Colour is one of the quietest tools a cinematographer has. Teal and orange grading gives blockbusters warmth against cool shadows; Wes Anderson builds symmetrical frames from pastel pinks and yellows; film noir strips colour away almost entirely. Pull the palette from a film you love and the grade is laid out as plain swatches — useful for designers, colourists, students and anyone building a mood board.
Frequently asked questions
Is this movie palette generator free?
Yes. Upload a video, get the palette and the hex codes, and download the image at no cost.
Does my video get uploaded?
No. For most videos the frames are read on your own device and only a small set of thumbnails is sent for the colour maths. The video file itself stays on your computer.
How many colors will I get?
Five or six. That is what a film usually contains once near-duplicates are removed — ask for ten and most titles simply return several shades of the same hue.
Which video formats work?
MP4 and MOV are the most reliable, which is what phones and cameras produce. Still images work too if you would rather pull a palette from a single frame.
Can I use these colors in my own work?
Yes — colour values are not copyrightable, so the hex codes are yours to use in designs, mood boards and palettes.
